My Word and Verse of the Year for 2019

My word for 2019 is: Today.  The verse that goes with it is 2 Corinthians 6:2:  “For he says, ‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’  I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” This may seem like a strange choice as a Word of the Year, so I will explain the significance.  I have talked with people in the past when I am trying to make a change in my life—create a new habit or get rid of one that isn’t serving me, about focusing on the day—creating the circumstances and positive thoughts to help me be successful in that change for one day.  This is usually doable—and may even feel special, because you are really giving that day the priority—the day that’s in front of you—“today” is your focus as you work toward success and victory.  That makes today powerful.

To add to my fascination with “today,” I heard a podcast this year from Joyce Meyer that focused on the special, powerful anointing that is on today.  That wasn’t the focus of the podcast—the focus was more on procrastination and why people put things off, and how illogical it is at times.  Even though it wasn’t the focus of the message, the idea of the present moment, “today’ having a special anointing has stayed with me.  Do you ever get the sense that God is telling you to do something?  As in, go say something encouraging to the lady waiting in line to pay for her groceries?  Or, maybe he impresses on you to invite someone you don’t know very well to come to church with you or even to approach a person you don’t know at all and tell them that God loves them.  Maybe, you sense God drop an amazing idea into your heart and head—a fabulous idea for a book club or a Sunday school lesson, or a tea party or a children’s book or a play you could write…

Do you seize the moment and act on the impression TODAY?  Follow the nudge of the Holy Spirit and say what he impresses you to say?  Get out your pen and paper and start working on ideas for the children’s book or tea party?  Or…do you start yourself out of it?  Tell yourself that it’s not really God or that this idea can’t be one you are to act on because you don’t know anything about illustrating a children’s book or throwing a tea party, and God knows you are way too shy to talk to strangers…

I have followed both of those paths in the past.  I have had brave moments where I took the risk and approached the stranger or started the project.  And, I’ve had many more times when I have squelched the nudge or waited too long, or sat down to work on the idea a few weeks later.  I guess that’s better than nothing, but what would have happened if I had acted on it in the moment, when I was first impressed with the idea from the Holy Spirit?

Thus, I want to focus on living TODAY in 2019.  I want to experience TODAY in all of its fullness—the fullness of salvation, God’s favor, being obedient in the moment and embracing the time I have right now, TODAY.  There is a power in the present moment.  This day is anointed for a special purpose.  This day has gifts that may not come around again.
